Secure ways to access your money overseas

See our Travel guide page for more tips to help prepare for your trip and protect your money while travelling.

Using your cards

Pay or withdraw cash by selecting 'Credit' with your Visa Debit Card or Visa Credit Card wherever the Visa logo is displayed.

Using your PIN numbers overseas

Paying by card or withdrawing cash at an ATM with your PIN number may require a 6-digit PIN.

If you're prompted for a 6-digit PIN:

  • add '00' to the start of your 4-digit PIN
  • for example, 1234 would become 001234.

Prepare for overseas fees and charges

Overseas charges differ from home, make sure you know what to expect:

  • check our Fees & Charges document to confirm which fees and charges may apply on the cards you plan to use.
  • use your Visa Credit Card or Visa Debit Card to help avoid ATM fees and keep your conversion fees to a minimum.

Local ATMs may have different limits on transactions and fees and charges may apply.

Spending cash

You may find it helpful to have some local currency on hand. If you need cash while travelling:

  • withdrawing larger amounts less often can help to avoid ATM fees
  • be careful when carrying large amounts of cash.

A mix of cash and cards while overseas is helpful, so you have a backup payment method if one is lost or stolen. You can buy foreign cash before you depart at currency exchanges.

If your card is lost or stolen in Australia, call our 24/7 Customer hub on 13 11 82 or visit your nearest branch as soon as possible.
