Ready to fly?

Your journey might have started researching photos of white-sand beaches, ski-ready powdered mountains or bucket list historical sites. You’ve picked destinations, booked tours and thrifty accommodation, or maybe you're just making an overdue visit to family and friends. Whatever your reason is for take-off, our guide can help you do a pre-flight check.

Before you go

The steps below are also covered in our handy Banking tips for overseas travellers guide that you can download and take with you.

Set up account access

Make sure your accounts, personal details and card limits are up to date before you travel.

See what you need to know to ensure you can access your People First accounts and use your cards and PIN number correctly while overseas.

Check Smartraveller

Smartraveller is an Australian Government resource that provides a range of services and travel warnings.

A crisis page will be activated if there's a situation overseas that could affect Australians. If it affects you and you need help, visit the Smartraveller website and follow the prompts.

Copy important documents

Make photocopies of your passport, travel itinerary, travel insurance policy and any other information you may need access to in an emergency.

Leave these copies with a trusted friend or family member.

Update your passport

Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from the start of your trip. Visit the Australian Passport Office website to apply for or renew your passport.

Need any vaccines?

Check the Australian Government's immunisation guide to see if you need any vaccinations before you depart. National Immunisation Program (NIP) vaccines are free-of-charge to eligible people.

Mail and pet care

Arrange for a friend or family member to collect your mail and plan safe boarding or a pet-friendly mate to care for your furry (bald or scaly) friends while you're away.

Protect your cards and cash

Keep the tips below in mind as you shop overseas and see our blog for more ways to keep your money safe while travelling.

Keep your cards and money separate

Ensure you have a backup in case anything is lost or stolen.

Don't let merchants imprint your card

Most merchants use electronic means to process your card details instead of taking a manual imprint of your card. If they insist on a manual imprint, it's safer to pay cash and keep your card safe.

Check receipts carefully before you pay

Make sure you know what you're paying for and keep your receipts until you've checked your statements.

Review your transactions often

Regularly check transactions and balances (including any 'Funds on hold') with the People First Bank App or Online Banking.
