Choosing the right caravan

Consider what trips you’ll be taking

A good starting point is figuring out what type of caravan you need. You may already have some idea of what you’re going to be using it for. Is it for a year-long road trip of a lifetime? Or to take short adventures every now and then? Consider how many people are going to be travelling in it and whether you’ll be taking it off-road.

Will a towing vehicle be needed?

If you’re wanting to buy a campervan, motorhome or RV, you don’t need to worry about a towing vehicle. But if not, do you already have a suitable car you can tow a caravan with? Make sure you check your cars towing capacity. Don’t forget to consider what you’re comfortable with towing as well. While we’re talking about size – make sure the caravan will fit where you’re intending to store it when you’re not using it.

Know your budget

Once you’ve decided on the type of caravan you’re looking for, consider whether you’re buying new or used, and make sure you set a realistic budget. What are your must-haves? Are you flexible? Are you going to be making any upgrades or modifications? You might not need facilities if you’re going to be going to be using the ones at campgrounds. Consider how you’re going store it – do you have room at your property or will you need to pay for storage?

What to look for

Regardless of whether you’re buying new or second-hand, it’s important to do a thorough inspection and ask lots of questions. If you’re wondering what to check when buying a used caravan, ask about the history, both in terms of maintenance and what kind of trips it’s been on. When visually inspecting, check the exterior for any damage, rust or leaks. Check all electrical connections, tyres, the suspension, the towing and don’t forget the undercarriage.

    Inspect the interior thoroughly
Take your time checking the appliances, seals, lights, electrical components, plumbing and general wear. If you can, take the caravan for a test drive to see how it feels to drive. This is a great way to test how it performs with your vehicle if towing it.

    Visit a caravan yard
If you’re buying a new caravan, you might enjoy visiting a caravan yard and comparing multiple models at the same time. By browsing different layouts and seeing what really works for you, this can be a good way to work out your must haves.

    Second-hand vans
Always ensure a second-hand van passes an inspection from your state transport’s body (required for registration).

    Do your research
Importantly, take the time to check out all the different online caravan forums and research the good and bad choices that other caravan owners like you have made.
