The 2025/26 financial year is almost over, which means it might be time to start thinking about your tax return. Getting your tax return done doesn't have to be difficult. To help you along the way, we've pulled together this list of five tax return tips.

1. Work out if you need to do a tax return

For some people, it can be straightforward to work out if you need to lodge a tax return, but everyone's situation is different. There are criteria and exemptions to consider. The ATO has a complete guide to work out if you need to lodge a tax return in Australia.

2. Learn about what you can and can’t deduct or claim

For most people, deductions are usually only made on work-related expenses, such as: tools and equipment, uniforms, education, and some travel expenses. There are also more complex deductions available if you earn income on investments – like shares or property. It's important to check the ATO's guidelines on this, so please refer to the ATO directly for further information.

3. Have your income and expense documents ready

A tricky part of preparing your tax return can be getting all your receipts, expense forms, and other documents together. You can save yourself time and stress by putting these things in one place throughout the year. This means more than just keeping receipts, but also keeping track of any income from: work, pensions, superannuation, shares, rebates, investment properties, grants, and allowances.

You could try:

  • Save digital copies/photos of your documents somewhere secure with a strong password;
  • Print your most important documents and store them in a safe place; or
  • Use an app, like ATO myDeductions, to help you keep work-related receipts in one place.

4. Keep your personal information updated with the ATO

You can link your ATO account to your myGov account online. Once your accounts are linked, you can update your home address, phone number and other personal information. You can also find PAYG summaries and group certificates which you will need to complete your tax return.

5. Seek assistance if you need it

If you're unsure where to begin with your tax return, there are lots of online resources available to get you started on your own. Otherwise, a registered tax agent (e.g. a Certified Public Accountant or ‘CPA’) can help you get started. Only a registered tax practitioner can charge you a fee for preparing your tax return.
